Vera Portatadino is a multidisciplinary artist currently focused on painting and drawing installation.

Her practice reflects on the precariousness of a Vision, of which the work is merely a trace.

From her viewpoint, ‘Every artistic gesture is an attempt to manifest this precariousness and make it withstand time’.

Vera is particularly interested in Landscape. She investigates the relationship between its actual appearance and the way it exists on the canvas after the interference of time and memory.

Through a process of superimposing, editing out information and selecting traces, she creates curious atmospheres, subtle dejà-vus that lie between memory and dream, the origins of which begin with a journey, in a specific time and a specific place within reality.

While traveling, Vera takes some quick documentation of the surroundings. Afterwards she filters the records in her studio, allowing the intervention of memory, interpretation and chance. In doing so, she relives transient experiences that evoke a certain mystery of the existence. In fact, the sceneries are real and unreal at the same time, always on the edge of disappearing.

With particular emphasis, in her paintings and drawings Vera combines images of natural elements with manmade and neglected objects whilst playing between abstraction and figuration. Some other times, she depicts the other side of a landscape, the looking subject: herself on the verge of changing and dissolving.

The precariousness of the Vision converges into precariousness of Being, that is the human condition. Thus, Vera does not neglect to touch the theme of identity from a philosophical and a psychological viewpoint.
